I’ve Got Your Back

With everything going on right now, who’s got your back? Having a few people that you can count on for support, is worth it’s weight in gold. Speaking of which, after having my Dad here for a week, hunched over in a chair, with a magnifying glass as big as an ipad so he could see the print, it was apparent why he has nagging back pain. It was so painful to witness and no matter what I did to try to help his ergonomics, with macular degeneration and glaucoma, it was a fruitless endeavor. Most of the time these are tried and true tips If you suffer from pain so keep reading; I’ve got your back.

Everyone is sitting a lot more that they used to these days and with that, comes expanded waist lines, pounds and pressure on our skeletal system and joints and ligaments. This throws our system out of wack, creating weak links that result in back pain.

Facts:

  • 80% of all people will experience back pain at one point in their lives.
  • About 50% of the population that work complain of their aching back regularly.
  • It is the leading cause of missed work and and accounts for more than 264 million people world wide.
  • Most back pain is due to improper body mechanics as opposed to inflammatory arthritis, cancer, fractures or infection.
  • Most back pain will subside by proper body mechanics and proper treatment.

In general what happens when we sit, is we are shortening our hip flexor muscles (inner groin muscles and part of the psoas) and psoas; (the muscle that extends from your lower lumbar spine through your hip to the femur), and allows the hip to flex, as in walking. If we slump all day we are elongating our back muscles which decreases strength and weakens our chest muscles, (pectoral muscle) and core muscles that support our back. This puts too much load on our discs and joints unnecessarily, which results in pain.

The visual below pretty much explains it. See how when the body bends forward it creates a compression/contraction in the entire front of your body and makes for an unhappy or a really angry back. Also, look at what happens to the head as it jets forward taking our cerival spine (neck) out of alignment and pulls on the back. The cervical spine (neck), thoracic spine (mid back) and lower lumbar (lower back) are actually all one even though they are broken down into different segments and referred to separately at times. Each structure has an impact on the other. Our neck weighs between 6 and 12 pounds and when that happens, neck and shoulder pain also get into the action.

And that friends, is how the saying it’s a pain in my neck or ass came into play. That is why I often ask someone “what or who is a pain in your neck or arse”? In Reiki (hands on healing), it is believed that low back pain in associated with guilt. Sometimes, when I ask the question and someone can see what is triggering the sensation it will disappear if it has an emotional component to it.

Of course falls from sports injuries or loss of balance etc. can result in fractures and back pain but most back pain is from improper mechanics. Bulging discs are also often a result of poor body mechanics.

Proper Body Mechanics

  • Sit or stand with your vertebra stacked from your sacrum to the top of your head.
  • Keep space hip width apart between your legs, even when you are sitting, (no crossing your legs please). You feet need to be flat on the floor.
  • Keep your pelvis slightly tucked for proper curvature of your spine.
  • Keep your shoulders, hips and knees in alignment with your head directly over your cervical spine.
  • Your chin should be tucked so that it is in alignment with your shoulders.

Modalities That Help:

Stretching

Stretching is vital to lengthen muscles to release tight muscles. Generally holding 30-60 seconds is a good rule of thumb or every second for each year you are.

Exercises

Exercising helps you strengthen muscles so they can give you the support you need to keep you uplifted and strong. Strengthening your abdominals and back are vital to eliminate back pain.

Massage

Massage is a wonderful modality to loosen tight muscles and lets them relax, giving you relief. There are many different types of massage depending on what you need. Swedish, Trigger Point, MFR (myofascial Release), ART (Active Release Therapy) are often great massage forms of body work for back pain. Modalities such as Rolfing (restructuring), Thai, or deep tissue might actually throw your body into spasm; making it worse.

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy is the connection of the bones in our head and the dural tube in the spinal column that connect to our sacrum. We use the bones as anchors to release tight connections and allow the cerebral spinal fluid to move which helps release stuck areas through sensory and skilled hands. It can be very effective for back pain, anxiety, stress, insomnia etc.

Chiropractic or Soft tissue mobilization

If you need to move a bone back into alignment, this is a great modality as long as you don’t use high velocity chiropractic which uses force. 1-3 people in 100,000 people can have a stroke when using force. While this may not seem like a lot; If you are the 1, it’s 100 %. In my certification exam for Swedish Massage which is a light touch with long strokes, someone went too deep on an older woman and their client had a TIA (mini stroke) and was rushed to the hospital), so I always aim for using the least amount of force to accomplish the same result and use soft tissue release to help move the bone in place while I help guide and support the process.

Acupuncture

The principle is based on opening up channels in the body through the 14 meridian lines where chi might be blocked. Needles are placed in different parts of the body with either thin Japanese style needles or thicker, Chinese needles in particular areas to stimulate neurohormonal paths, and blood flow releasing pain. I personally have had both the chinese needles which for are very painful for me and the Japanese which I barely know are in me so I much prefer those.

  • Note: Take out the side plank until you are pain free

15 Minute Daily Back Exercise Routine

Avoid The Following If you have Back Pain:

  • People that drain your energy
  • Heavy Lifting
  • Bending at the waist: Bend both knees with and squat to pick up any items.
  • One sided activities: try to alternate sides
  • Golf: Puts more pressure on discs because you bend to pick up the ball and twist.
  • Spinal Twists: Avoid at first and add slowly.
  • Heat usually; Ice is the general rule of thumb for the first 48 hrs to reduce inflammation.
  • Slouching
  • Soft chairs and couches and don’t forget to loose some weight-:)

* Topicals such as biofreeze, juniper, peppermint, helecrysm, black pepper (essention oils) can help you feel better but don’t solve the issue. I use a homeopathic Arnic 200 or 30 3-4 times a day.

Memories of days gone by 

When the bell rang on Friday,

laughter while we trudged up the hill in our saddle shoes,

telling jokes and comparing notes of fashion and friends,

Thank God for the weekend where we could let the fun begin.

I think of the kids starting school in Covid at home on line, 

And the teachers on Zoom, sitting behind a

screen with break out rooms, and chats, mute and unmute.

While happy to be there, it’s just not the same.

 But there’s no more sass from the ones that won’t listen because……

there is always mute and they just can kick them out….(so watch out parents cuz you won’t get a break so better get them to listen up….easier said that done I know).

Too bad they can’t ring a bell and hand out ice cream at the end. 

I sceam, you scream, We ALL scream for Ice Cream.

What is your Mantra?

This is easier said than done but always our path to freedom. Besides, it’s going to be what it is and all the angst, fret and worry won’t change anything but your internal terrain. So ride it out and keep your mind on your mantra while you move through the rivers of your soul.

What is your mantra today?

Mine is Just Breathe.

The world can drop from under your feet, smoke can cloud your vision and take your material goods but if you are still standing we are alive this moment in all it’s glory and destruction. It is a call to open your heart and let it flow like a river while you float in the wide open spaces of your world and mind.  

Hold yourself tenderly and lightly as you move through your day.

Grow in Wisdom

Wisdom is optional, Aging is not. To be wise you must remain open minded, learn and grow especially as things become more challenging. Staying rigid in belief and thought are reflected in the body.

How do we continue to grow in wisdom as we age, especially now in the pandemic with our new normal in place? It makes one question the constructs you have put in place for yourself in life and if you have prepared yourself for the unexpected. Are you able to shift gears and live in what is verses what was, trying to get back to normal as you go about your day that you are not open to the moment?

We all deal with things differently and I for one hit the ground running when my terrain has been shaken or embers threaten my internal world. I train myself daily to be mindful and practice meditation, qigong, Tai Chi etc. I try to stay present so when difficult times happen in my life that require me to find calm and joy in chaos, I can access it. It’s not enough to sit, it is the everyday moments that teach us to put it into action, what we practice and therein lies the work which isn’t as easy as it seems. Practice what we preach as the old antage goes.

Well guys, the fires have finally hit our home indirectly. There is smoke in the air with the threatening of lightning and heat so we are on alert but we are okay for now. I mentioned my 86 year old father and his girlfriend who is 90 were more at risk and they indeed had to evacuate their house the other night due to the fires since they are about 6 miles away. I don’t think they were threatened as much as they wanted the roads closed since it’s a windy 2 lane thoroughfare and the fire fighters need access to the areas behind them. If the winds do shift, embers could hit one of their at least 200 trees on the property and with a shake roof, it could quickly turn to no way out.

My Dad couldn’t reach me right away because I was in a session the other night when the fire department knocked on his door to evacuate them. When I called back he said he was was disappointed in me. I had talked to him earlier for about 45 minutes and everything seemed ok but I did say he could come here if something happened and temporarily moved in with us.

It cut to the core because I am always here for my family no matter what and for the life of me, I’m not sure what he was so disappointed about yet, but I have lived my whole life for his approval. I thought I healed that wound but here I am once again facing this feeling of sadness, anger and pain.

We picked him up and he is staying here until things are safe and clear to return. I get to practice being present with my feelings, his and forgive but right now it’s cordial and chilly which is good since it’s so blazing hot outside. He can’t see with macular degeneration and glaucoma and is bone on bone so is in pain a lot of the time. He had a stroke 2 years ago after elective heart valve replacement and I was there for him every step of the way. It’s really sad to see your robust father that was so strong and athletic decline. He needs help to accommodate his aging body which he refuses to acknowledge which is frustrating because he will be going blind and won’t make choices while he still can and I will be forced to make them for him. He lives up the hill 20 minutes from us and we need to work full time to make ends meet which makes response time a problem.

I continue to look for the lesson and silver lining while we acknowledge this internal struggle for all of us living under one roof with our 2 adult children as well who moved in after the pandemic. We have had to learn how to navigate and move into an adult relationship together changing our old structure of our adult child relationship which has been a gift but not without a lot of discussion and falling back into old patterns.

I am struck by other countries where living together is the norm and they are interdependent on each other. Some of the millenials actually want to move but don’t want to upset their parents. When we were in Bali, we were so struck by everyone living together and asked the families how they manage it. They looked at us so perplexed and couldn’t understand why we didn’t live with our family members. I remember growing up and I couldn’t wait to go away to college at 18 and move out and I never looked back. Things were pretty rocky at home and I needed to move for my own salvation and in America that was the norm.

Now, here we are and 2 of our 4 kids are living with us and we are all navigating this uncharted territory which hasn’t been easy, but finding the benefits while managing the complexities of the financial burden and help with daily chores. America is now catching up and finding that 55% of the 22-35 years olds are living in fact do live at home and I’m sure that number will rise with the pandemic in place until who knows when.

But let’s be clear, this is a challenging time and as I age I find it difficult to live with anyone anymore, if I am to be completely honest. And I would venture to say, they find it difficult to live with me as well.

Having my Dad here is a deeper opportunity for letting go of trying to please someone so near and dear to my heart even though I know that I am not there at the moment. Our days are numbered and short. Life is fragile. I won’t get these moments and days back. I have a choice. What do I want? Will I choose to sit with this and stew and let it consume me and miss the opportunity of growth or will I let it go and clear the air? No doubt he was scared since I’m his lifeline.

I am reminded of the words of Don Miguel Rodriguez in his book The 4 Agreements which I listed below.

The Four Agreements:

  1. Be Impeccable with your word.
  2. Don’t take anything personally.
  3. Don’t make assumptions
  4. Always do your best

I am going to go to my mat now and pray to open my heart and release my ego of righteousness and illusion.

I will go in and invite him for a chat. I’m not sure where it will take us exactly but I will go forward, not backward in time or division.

It’s time to practice what I preach and It is so much easier when I am facilitating a Life Coaching session, rather than living one.

And this my friends is how you coach yourself.

Have a blessed day and remember What someone thinks of you is NOT your Business, so don’t take it personally. But don’t hold on to it, you only hurt yourself.

Fun Friday Movie Release

Hi Friends,

First of all, thanks for all of your concerns about my safey in regards to the the fires. It’s pretty surreal all over the state of California and many areas are 0 % contanined as we speak. We are all safe and feel very grateful. My Dad (86) and his girlfriend (90) got evacuated last night and several of my son’s friends have as well. As a matter of fact, Teddy Miller, who took the amazing pictues I posted Wednesday of the fires is one of them. Some of his friends have lost their homes and our blessings go out to all of them. Be safe Teddy! We are all doing well and the skies are clear as I write so thanks for your blessings.

Fire of the Heart and Sky

Hearts beat as one, open and weak at the knees

The stop sign ignored

The siren in a distance

Food on the stove simering

Things are heating up

Red wine, licorice vines, hosing us down

Lovers, strangers, kids lost in the night

Electricity drawing us closer in embrace

While others run and flee

A shot on the outside, a pop on the inside

This moment, so primal and guteral upon entry

Kids screaming in the street

The fire getting closer

The beans smouldering on the stove

Moans, grons, sirens getting louder

The smell permeates the room,

Sheer delight

I flush the toilet and look out the window

A fire of the heart and Sky

Memories of once before as flames turn all to ashes

The Waddell Creek Fire happened Sunday night and these pictures were captured by our family friend Teddy Miller. It was burning directly over hwy 1 in California. Luckily no commumities were threatened.

You might also remember hearing about the Lake County Fires in California which were devastating. That is where we were at the lake house last weekend where I shared pictures of our family weekend. We are blessed we were not affected by them but know many who were.

8 is Great or Very Late!!!

Hi Friends,

I am very honored and humbled by all of these awards. Thank all of you so much for both nominating me and reading my blog posts. The biggest joy for me, is to meet fellow writers and develop a community of support. I love writing and reading what you all have to say and I get so excited to read what you have hot off the press in the morning (ok and sometimes noon & night). Our exchange and daily banter, makes my day brighter so thank you. I never thought I would say that because I don’t enjoy other social media platforms but this is FUN! And as you know, if you’re reading any of my posts, I’m working on having more fun which is actually a lot of work for me since I’m in a huge learning curve at the moment. Ha, ha. If I am to be completely honest, I am also overwhelmed and embarrassed that it’s taken me this long and have let them accumulate, but I have been chastised by my family for the amount of time I’m spending writing these days along with my full time profession. I’m trying to make a concerted effort to be more available and close my devices down for part of the day. Who knew they could be so addictive and difficult to learn but I’m not ready to be a dinosaur…..YET!

Just to warn you, this is going to be a long post so if you want to scroll down to the awards and see who the amazing bloggers are that nominated me, scroll down to the bottom. And perhaps you’ll see your name there as well with a nomination, if you are dreaming of getting an award.

First off, I want to say to all of the bloggers that have received awards; Congratulations and to let those who haven’t received one yet, that you will. But, I’m gonna warn you, be careful what you wish for and remember, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Just remember, speak from your heart and share your message of truth to the world and people will feel your heart through your fingers as you tap away on your key board. The other thing I want to say is that the first time you get an award you will be over the moon (at least I was) and think you hit the jackpot or as Kumar said; “there would be a big party” to celebrate him. I told all of my family and friends and I even put it on my newsletter because I was so excited. We’re still waiting for that celebration Word Press. Lol! I remember spending ALL day working on it completely frustrated because I could barely figure out word press to begin with. The worst was, my kids and my assistant found it difficult to navigate as well, so I was on my own. To be fair, Word Press does not give these awards out, bloggers do.

The Purpose of awards:

It’s a way that other bloggers acknowledge your work and for you to share your admiration with readers as well, by picking others that you find read worthy, after being nominated. I’m adding this section here because I really didn’t understand all of this in the beginning and had a heck of a time navigating it, and if it wasn’t for Pooja at Lifesfinewhine, I’d have lost my mind!

I knew I wanted to write a post about Awards when I read people were feeling bad about not getting one so I thought what better time since I have been behind the 8 ball with 8 awards waiting for my attention. It occured to me to Google Word Press Awards and I found a great one here from Michelle Weber titled Isn’t It Lovely to understand Blog awards. Michelle is an editor for Word Press on The Daily Post that sums it up and answers all of your questions really well, so check it out.

When you get an award, you have a few choices:

  1. You can accept and thank them profusely for nominating you and start your write up right away. You don’t have to do it that second but don’t wait and let them add up because it’s easy to forget someone that nominated you like in my case (sorry if that happened). So, write them down in your notes somewhere or start a post and save the permalink (google that or use chat) and add them to your saved post as you get them.

  2. You can just say thank you very much, I’m honored but I don’t do awards. It’s just fine as it takes time and it depends on what your motive is. You aren’t going to some pie in the sky but you will draw more SEO (Search Engine Optimization) according to some and if you are trying to grow a following this can be helpful. If this is a hobby and you just enjoy writing, DON’T WORRY ABOUT IT! See Pooja’s post from Lifeswhine on How to get more Traffic for some Great Tips on SEO’s and DO (domain optimization). It’s enough to make my head spin but I’m slowly getting it. When in doubt forget about it, and just write but as you get launched check these tools out. Rising Star’s article on How to Create the Perfect SEO Content, is great and he also goes into D.O. (domain optimization). He also created the Ideal Blogger Award. Smart cookie, I’d say, with some really great tips as well.

  3. You can ask for help on how to copy and paste it into a blog post etc. without feeling embarrassed because you don’t know how to do it. Hey, It’s the first time you’ve done it, so cut yourself some slack. Google it or go to the question mark on the bottom right of your write post area. And if you have a paid site you can do a live chat which is exactly why I paid so I could have access and then I forget to use it. As a disclaimer; YOU WILL FORGET ALL OF THIS so don’t worry, just write your content and get it out there. And remember, there is always Pooja and you can even email her-:). It’s amazing she’s still talking to me. Ha, ha!

  4. Make sure to thank the person who nominated you and just be clear on whether you will accept or not.

Tips to help:

  1. Before choosing your nominees, save yourself some time and look at their site to see if they accept them or not or if they’ve just received the one you were going to nominate them for.

  2. Don’t take it personally when they don’t do it. I’ll never forget how surprised I was when the amazing bloggers that I nominated turned me down. I mean, why weren’t they as excited as I was? Someone I nominated actually said “ha ha, I’ll go check it out”. I was mortified but you know he did, and he ended up making a nice comment on my award. And now we are bantering friends which is great fun.

  3. It could be stuck in spam so ask them to check and see if it’s there. That’s happened to me a few times. I just found out where spam was tonight and I had 14 messages pending. oops! But see, that didn’t stop me from growing a following (which is in it’s infant stages) and writing. Remember, writers write!

  4. You do not have to nominate others if you don’t want to but if you have time, it does keep bloggers blogging and building a following.

So all in all, be clear this is one of the biggest ponzi schemes ever (sorry to burst your bubble) but in a good way though and the creators of the awards are brilliant for starting it. I do think it’s a good thing that keeps people writing and honing their skill. Like, I said Writers write. Not much different than anything else in life: bikers, bike; marathoners, run; photographers, take pictures. To get good in writing you have to keep your “pencil” sharp.

I also wanted to let you know that I will continue to participate in awards if I can find the time so please don’t take it personally if I say no. If I can I definitely will. I’ll most likely be opening it up for anyone that wants to claim the award.

What’s your time killer?

I would have to say blogging lol. Also, prioritizing since I get on a project and have a difficult time stopping until I get it right. 🤪

Do you think that blogging alone can help you to share your thoughts?

I certainly don’t. I journal, write “letters to God” annually and in my heart daily. I love sending cards to people I love and like to keep the art of pen to paper with a stamp alive. Funny thing in lockdown, I haven’t been doing it since I’m glued to constant learning here and other platforms

Are you a good listener?

Well, I hope so since it is my job to be an active listener. I use a Socratic approach knowing that people have their own answers. Lately, I would have to say I voice my opinion to family members more than they might like and have been a little less patient; sorry about that. I’m noticing I like to resolve issues and if I hear the same problem over and over, I give my good idea a lot more than I used to.

Did I mention Pooja from Lifesfinewhine? lol. I think we all would agree, she is the kindest person ever and truly supports us in navigating this platform. Thank you girl for being a great cheerleader and support to me and others as we continue to navigate this arena. 😘

What was the happiest moment in your life?

I have to say the birth of each of my children so sorry I can’t pick just one. Well, sometimes I could and would rotate one out from one day to the next. (Just kidding of course). 3 of the 4 were born at home. It was the happiest experience of being part of this magical unexplainable moment, where God is ever present. Being in the here and now with no beginning or end, just the present is a treasuered memory in my heart. Time disappears and the present is a meditation, drinking in the NOW.

What are your hobbies except blogging?

Hiking, learning to play the flute, singing, dancing, practicing the Uke. Drumming, swimming is becoming one lately to avoid the bloody heat and gardening.

What is a new habit you want to form or quit?

Getting up at 5:30 or latest 6 a.m. (which I’ve been doing) for my writing, making more Youtube videos and my morning practice. Also, building more breaks into my schedule for down time.

If you could time travel, when and where would you go?

Well, around now, I think I would be a queen for a day and let everyone dress me and feed me but NO CORSETS please as I would let my waist expand while I ate delectable food and danced the night away. I’d get tired of that life in a nano second, so a day would do me just fine.

Where would you like to travel after the pandemic?

Hawaii again, Thailand, The Cinque Terra, The Swiss Alps, Zion National Park. I think one natural wonder a year would be cool.

What motivated you to start a blog?

I’m trying to remember… I think it was about 5 years ago since I was writing my newsletter. I think I was also processing a lot and wanted to share my story. I stopped since my practice was so busy and with the pandemic, a window opened up as a few doors shifted since I’m not driving to as many clients and doing more zoom sessions.

What’s the most attractive quality in a person?

Their honesty and ability to connect, look you straight in the eye and you can feel there heart without words.

3.What do you do to make a bad day better?

Well, honestly, I wear my feelings on my sleeve and you will just feel it if you’re around me. Later, I apologize (well, I’m working on that.. lol) and then I get out and get my body moving on either a walk or play music, do Tai Chi and Yoga or strength training.

What is your ideal holiday destination?

While I love to explore new sites and tour it’s generally to sit at a beach and swim and read and write. With that said, I love architecture and temples and will not miss a sight and hit them all but I always end the day chilling.

No, I’ve never written a book but, it’s on my bucket list. Well, I don’t know exactly what it will be but a teaching memoir of such. I don’t think of myself as a writer and I told one of my Godson’s, that also writes that, and later he texted me back and said. “You are a Writer, You Write”! It touched me profoundly! So dear. You will meet him soon as he is going to join our Writers Community. Ok, I’m going to tell you a little secret but don’t tell anyone promise?!? I’ve just started writing a book. shhh… that was scary to say. The cat’s out of the bag. Maybe I can get my cat Stargazer to be my editor. Lol. It will be a teaching memoir and I’m developing it now.

If today is your last day on earth, what would you do?

Oh, I would hang out with my family and furry family and best friends with catered food of every delectable delight and of course chocolate. I’d be here at home and play music and dance with a great band and I would sing thank you for being my friend. We would laugh and cry and tell stories and swim.

When you feel like things aren’t going your way, what do you do?

Do them anyway. I have learned that when they are in your heart, you follow it and trust the messages you are gettng even when you can’t make sense of them. I’m not afraid to drop something all together if that’s right but only if I get a loud and clear message. I keep going until that’s the case. Life always leads you to where you need to be, if you get out of your way and follow your heart. And BTW it isn’t always easy.


According to you, what’s the key to self acceptance?

Loving yourself exactly the way you are so you can accept all aspects of yourself. Let’s face it, it’s easy to love yourself when things are going great but can you embrace your shadow side (we all have one), when they aren’t and hold yourself lovingly and gently? That is key!

When did you realize that you loved writing?

I truly am not sure but it is something I have done for as long as I remember.

What is the purpose behind creating this blog?

My purpose is to share my pearls of wisdom I have learned from so many great teachers and mentors in my life. If I can help one person my mission is achieved and I think through writing we can touch so many more people. It just became apparent that there was a book in me that I was born to write. Shhh.. remember it’s a secret. lol.

Friday Fun-Days!

Time to put the books away and conjure up some fun. Kids know how to play inately, no matter what their Age!

So happy to have all 4 of the “kids” home for a visit after 7 months of our “Baby” living in the Big Apple.

The game starts out fun 
With healthy competition
Cheering each other on with high 5’s And fist bumps,
Laughter and friendly banter.

There’s dancing and shouting with encouraging words and then losers get sore shouting obscenities hoping to score.

Quiet laugher turns to screams and the other team gets wild saying “it’s been awhile since I’ve taken you down”.

It’s in the bag or so they think
but soon the table turns and the wind has it’s way
The game’s over but they’re on to another for the chance of revenge.
Their hopes are high so they get their rally song on and do it again!

Lake County

This is in front of our lake house in Lower Lake, California where we’ve been going ever since the kids were born. My parents went when they were growing up and we had many vacations there when I was young. The tradition continues with many family members and friends having houses on the lake. We feel so blessed to have this little oasis during Covid.

Fun Facts:

Lake County is a county located in the north central portion of the U.S. state of California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 64,665. The county seat is Lakeport. The county takes its name from Clear Lake, the dominant geographic feature in the county and the largest natural lake wholly within California. The first vinyards were planted in 1870’s which was replaced by pear and walnut trees. In 1960’s after prohibition the wine region took off and is one of the largest growing wine regions in all of California. It is near the base of Mount Konocti Volcano which is a great hiking spot. The soil is mineral-rich at high altitude of 1,370 to 2,600 feet, where ile summers and cool winter temperatures create ideal conditions for producing elegant, complex wines. There are over 30 wineries in the area, many places to hike, some of the biggest bass tournaments and Konoctti Harbor Resort will be opening again after restoration and new ownership with concerts and a spa. Whoo Hoo! We can’t wait! Some of our favorite concerts were seen here: Chicago, The Beach Boys, Kelly Clarkson, Tim McGraw, Toby Keith, Doobie Brothers, The Steve Miller Band, Willie Nelson, David Crosby, Elvin Bishop, Alan Jackson, Sheryl Crow and Reba McEntire to ZZ Top, Poison, Kid Rock, Tim McGraw and Toby Keith (the list goes on and on)

Good Morning Everyone ~

When I was digging up my garden to plant this year, I needed to take the well established Thyme out to make room for something else. So, I dried it and then bottled it and put in my seasoning drawer and it’s so fragrant and fresh. I also replanted some in tiny pots and dropped them off at about 20 friends doors in town with a note that said “Thinking of you during this strange thyme”. It was really fun to warm people’s hearts and bring some good cheer. For others I couldn’t reach, I sent thyme seed pockets to them in the mail. You might enjoy stealing this idea for your friends if you have the thyme.

The Scientific Immunologic Metophysical Sandwich

Tonight I was with My friend who’s a Scientist and married to a immunologist so you can imagine their daily download at night sitting on their deck. 

We were of course at least 6 feet back with masks on because if you’re a scientist, you don’t take any chances.

I am a health and wellness professional which requires me to be up close and personal and don’t turn people away if they are sick. 

I have always attributed not getting sick very often to that.

My frequency is high, meaning I attune myself daily with universal wisdom as protection with Reiki, meditation, Qigong, yoga, music and affirmations etc.

My theory has always been I’m strong because I have built my immune system up and I do not buy into fear and turn things over to a higher power.  Growing up I went to Sunday school at a Christian Science Church and the one thing I took from the teaching was that the body had the power to heal itself through the mind and spirit. 

I witnessed some amazing miracles that science can’t explain.  

We did and I do see doctors and I’m not a purist by any means of the stretch but those early days left an imprint in my mind and the impact is wide spread in my DNA.

There is a lot of research about how the mind can control the body.  Now we are finding the same neuropaths in our heart and belly as in our brain which has only been found more recently. 

We can create more telomeres and new neuropathways in these centers boosting our immune function.

I don’t get the flu shot or immunizations unless  I might be traveling to a foreign country in which case I absolutely do.  I generally don’t take allopathic medication;  only alternative approaches such as accupuncture, body work, homeopathic, chiropractic and Craniosacral therapy, unless I need it.  It’s not to say that I never get sick because every once in awhile I get slammed and am down for the count for a short stint.  I don’t worry because I trust my body knows how to heal itself. You see, we grew up with the 30 sec rule where if something dropped on the floor, it was still good to pop in our mouth.  The pacifier went from the floor to our babies mouths several times a day which I attribute to developing immunities.

When I do get seriously injured, I don’t mess around and double dose on my ibuprofen (up to 800 ml… but don’t listen to me on this, I’m not a doctor) to knock the inflammation out quickly.

One dose usually does the trick and since I take it so infrequent, I don’t have to worry about the side effects of kidney, or liver issues.

My friend on the other hand, looks at statistics and shutters over my approach but admits that I have a strong immune system and it works for me.  She acknowledges everyone’s constitution is different.

She uses allopathic medicine and gets the flu shot every year and she hasn’t gotten the flu since she’s been getting it.  

We have great lively discussions which always ends with each of us shaking our head with data that neither of us agree with (scientists always win out but sometimes even the scientists don’t understand instantaneous healings when data points in a deathly trajectory). While studies often observe positive correlations, we must remember that correlation does not equal causation (as seen by diagram below)… Just like eating ice cream doesn’t cause a sunburn. Although, you may be more likely to eat ice cream in the sun. Does that make sense?

But we respect each other, so it always ends with a hug and now for the last 5 months, a bow.  

She studies mutations and ​connective chains in the body and how ​pathogens enter the body, multiply and spread in the community and are transferred like lightening. ​

I study, energy and peripersonal space and metaphysical affects on the body and how mind body and spirit are the medicine that heals the body.

Peripersonal Space

She came to see my for body work regularly until Covid-19 and now we both agree;  I’m not touching her right now with a 10 foot pole or anyone else for that matter.

Like all of us we are texting and emailing or at least 6 ft back on zoom in lively discussions and exercise.  It’s amazing how many clients I have trained to give their own massages online with a foam roller.  

Our scientific, Immunologic, Metaphysical Sandwich has finally blended into a mix we both agree on:

  • Keep your mask on
  • Stay Home unless necessary 
  • Stay Strong 
  • Use Sanitizers
  • Wash your Hands Often

I used to move forward when I saw people for a hug and now I back up if someone even comes close to being within 6 foot of me.  

Everyone I see gets their temperature taken, answers a questionnaire and is sprayed down with Clorox upon leaving.  NOT!

But all sanitation is taken seriously and wiped down thoroughly after sitting out for several days first.

This is an animal we don’t know or understand and this invisible robber of our lungs and bodies is not something we care to find out about in the least.  

She will act as a guinea pig and take the vaccine when it is released sometime next year and I’ll wait for 6 months to a year after all of the fall out happens.

I still trust my body over putting something foreign in it before I know the facts and the side effects of the drug.  With so many companies fighting to make a buck I will wait until I feel safe and comfortable taking that chance. 

Besides, I don’t know the drug companies however, she does, and she trusts science and knows the chemical interaction and effects on the body cellularly.

A COVID-19 Vaccine Reality Check - The Atlantic

So, it seems we are finally on the same page of wanting the same thing, with healthy skepticism respecting each other’s Sandwich of a different flavor.  I’ll wait until I add any condiments on mine until she has tested the water but remember we both have different immune systems and each will react differently.   

We need each other now more than other.

Listening to the science, being smart and safe with no political addenda or mumbo jumbo witchcraft is prudent and necessary to combat this beast.  

It’s this kind of respect that keeps us growing individually and as a people.  We need each other and if Covid is teaching us anything, it is to be respectful of each other and wear a mask and honor each other’s personal space.

I truly understand people not wanting to wear them.

I don’t love them either but it’s necessary.

 You can exercise your freedom if you don’t want to wear them in the confines of your own home.
