Unique Times

Where I share my jewels of wisdom of life

Happy Fun Fri-Yay to you All!

I’m going to warn you his post is gonna be long, so feel free to scroll quickly through. Just don’t miss Sarah and Phil’s Spoken Word Poetry. It’s worth the price of admission! I’m only posting twice a week at the moment so that’s the good news for you! 😅

Just when I think life can’t get any busier in expected and unexpected ways, which constantly change moment to moment, it does. We are in phase 3 of the remodel and we have 4 working rooms in the house right now, thank goodness. The dust on every surface in the house is everywhere and boxes and furniture are piled up on each other. It’s hard to find breathing space literally, and creativity and ingenuity are constant necessities since things keep changing. I’ve wheeled my stand-up desk into our bedroom to work so I can try to find respite but working in your bedroom is never optimal with the pillows calling your name when you start nodding off.

I notice the animals have no problem adjusting to the chaos and confusion and find a new spot to be and love hiding in new spaces. I just keep saying to myself, “pretend you’re the cat, be the dog”. Even my 88 year old father who is staying with us while he is recovering from carcinoma mohs surgery he had on his leg Wednesday, is navigating ok. Last week he fell down a stair in the garage when we visited my mom and thank God he was ok.

Today when he woke up he said “I bet you will be glad to get rid of me”. We laughed and I said “we all know that after 4 days, guests smell like fish”. I looked up the origin of the quote and it said 3 days, not 4, so we’re doing pretty well. 🥹🤣

The good news is we should be done with our project by the end of June, just in time to announce some more news that’s also under construction. I’ll share that with you when I get the green light.

My book is coming along and hopefully we’ll have more to share soon. I think I must be the worst client that Ingrid from Experiments in Fiction, has had. Just as she thinks we are ready to wrap things up, I think of something else I want to say in the 7th hour. I don’t want to forget anything and yet, how can I cover everything and who can read everything? NO ONE. It didn’t start out as a teaching memoir so there are lots of things that come to me, most often in the middle of the night, which make for dozing off during the day. Dozing off working with clients is never a good idea, so water and coffee are happy companions.

Take the cover of my book for example which I love, and we were all ready to share it with you today but then my sweet brother-in-law, sent be a painting he made specifically for my cover Monday, that is gorgeous too. While I should just say “thank you so much, but we have chosen one already”; Instead, I say “let me talk to my editor”. I bring it up to Ingrid because it’s wonderful too and I’m torn. She is as kind and gracious as she can muster but deep down, I know she’s thinking, “we have a deadline, and you are not my only client”. Really, I think? Lol.🤣 Imagine how I was when I was birthing babies, if I’m this bad with birthing my book.

I think gosh, “why didn’t I just stick to the poetry book?”. That part is done and would have been easy to throw into a book. Sigh. I realize this will never be me, I labor over every detail as my children will tell you, just like I did when I was raising them.

If you’ve written a book before maybe you’re like me or maybe you sail through it. If you’ve never embarked on the journey, there’s more to it than meets the eye. The structure, composition, placement of words, etc. It’s not unlike our blog writing in some ways but very different in others.

Here, I can ramble like I am now with the hope I drive my point home and am understood and tie things together in the end and one post won’t make or break you. With a book, there must be a beginning, middle and an end and it’s in a form that can’t be erased but in black and white print for everyone to see and there’s no delete button.

I just can’t help sharing a sneak preview with you. These are the 2 working images!

2 different Book Cover Options for my book Re-Create & Celebrate

SPOKEN WORD POETRY By Sarah Kay and Phil Kay

Monday night I went to a friend’s house to see spoken word poetry by 2 of my favorite poets Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye. My friend sat next to Sarah when she was practically a kid at the TED conference in Long Beach many years ago and was WOWED by her when she found out she was one of the chosen entertainers. It was a beautiful evening outside under the stars with the frogs in the background with about 30 of us. The next night they performed at Cowell Theater in San Francisco with 450 people, tonight they are in Los Angeles and then off to Canada on tour. I highly recommend seeing them if you ever have a chance.

The duo has collectively performed in thirty countries on stages from TED Talks to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and garnered over twenty million views online. Their most recent poetry books have both been Amazon bestsellers: “All Our Wild Wonder” by Sarah Kay and “Date & Time” by Phil Kaye. They are co-directors of Project VOICE – an organization that partners with schools and uses poetry to entertain, educate, and inspire.

They are dynamic, creative and all their poetry is inspired by their own lives, like most of us poets. I’m sharing 2 of their poems. One on how they met, “An Origin Story” which is an incredible story, which you can imagine with both sharing the same last name. It’s uncanny. The other is their poem, “When Love Arrives”, also not to be missed.

Enjoy every minute. I have seen them 3 times and never tire of their amazing talent and gifts of sharing.

Report about the Sub Tabs:

Not to end this on a shitty note, so I won’t but since I shared, I was having a dreaded colonoscopy and the Sub Tabs were going well, I wanted to update you on the results. They seemed to work like a charm for my first dosage and then the second dosage, I quickly swallowed all 12 pills quickly because I was getting so tired and thought “I best get the show on the road”. Big mistake as I threw up a bunch of the drink. It seemed to still be working just fine but I fell asleep finally at 4 a.m., when I should have taken miralax to make sure everything was clear. I took it right before I got to the doctor, but it should have been taken 3 hours before arriving. It ended up I had 3 polyps which they sent to the lab, and I was told I was not cleaned out and must come back in a year. OMG, Lovely. Next time, I’m fasting for 3 days and starting at 12 noon instead of 5:30 to be sure, if there is a next time. So the jury is out of the Sub Tabs.

Shark Tank Tonight:

Congratulations to my friend and website designer Eric Bechtal from Gameplan Digital and his client who will be on Shark tank episode which airs tonight Friday on ABC! His client will be the first one that will be pitching on the episode. The company is called Honey Bunchies but recently rebranded to Bon Bee Honey. Break a leg you guys! We’ll be watching and rooting for you!

Greek Easter

My daughter Narnia arrives late tomorrow night from Washington D.C. where she took 100 of her 8th grade students with 5 other teachers just in time for Greek Easter. It will be small with 2 of my daughters, son in law, my dad, mom, brother, and father in law. It will be his first time here since moving to his new facility. He’s still in a wheelchair but took 2 steps which is a start.

I’m not sure that I had a beginning, middle and end here and I’m certain I rambled with lots to share. I’m not even sure I’m on point but at least it’s just a post and not my book. 🤣

Have a wonderful weekend whatever you do and may the blessings of the moment stop you to be present to what is as you adapt and find moments of serenity.

Blessings and Love,

💞

Cindy

Cindy, I feel like I need to go take a nap after reading your FUN Friyay post. Oh Cindy, I am ever so glad my life is simpler than yours. 🙂 I was out of breath by the time I finished making it through your post. A few thoughts:
I have a friend who is one of Sacramento’s major interior decorators. She has remodeled tow of her homes, including a downtown Victorian. Her advice to me: “Don’t ever do it Curt. Jus tera it down and start over. it is ever so much easier.”
Having written one book and now working on another, I understand completely how much work it is. But there is also joy.
Read the Sarah and Phil poems. Loved them.
Sorry about the colonoscopy prep. That’s when I thought, my friend definitely has too much on her platter! 🙂

First of all, i wanna say i have been coming back and forth here on your blog to check if there are new posts i missed, as i don’t trust WP reader 🤭 and so finally..yay a new one..and i was never disappointed reading it from top to bottom..

So, i should have a “secondly”..here it is, i feel you when you were talking about your new book and having to make additional changes when you think your all good to go..that’s pretty normal.

Thirdly, oh, the book cover…i too am torn between the two. They are both stunning…🤭🤭🤭
Then the poetry reading.. i will live for later to watch..

And lastly, yay to your friend who will be on Shark Tank..i am a fan of this show..we just don’t get to watch real time episodes here on Asia, so i will be looking forward for this episode.

Cindy, what a rich post! You amaze me with your ability to be productive despite so much going on with home renovations, a father-in-law to care for, a book in production, and so on. I know writing a post this well developed takes incredible time. May all go well on all your projects! It sounds like the completions are in sight! ♥️🌹🌷🌺 Barbara

Oh my gosh, Cindy. Your post is so full, I don’t know where to start. Your remodel looks like a nightmare to live in. I don’t envy you at all. It will be worth it all in a few weeks. Your poor FIL. My dad used to say he would stay until one day before he wore out his welcome. He never succeeded. He wore me out before he got there – and we weren’t remodeling during the visit! Good luck with your book. I’ve finally started to edit the Story Chat posts for publication. The next step will be to find an editor. I will contact yours if she does things other than poetry.

I know exactly how remodeling goes, Cindy! I went through it many time. Our upcoming one is remodel the kitchen. We’ll put the oven in the laundry room with a gas hook-up. We’ll empty the cabinets. Fortunately we just moved in to our new home, and I haven[t unpack the kitchen stuff yet. Still, there’s quite a bit in the cabinets. I designed my own book covers for the poetry book and my memoir. I made many changes. For the chldren’s book, I did the sketch and gave detailed instruction to my illustrator, the position, then hand gesture, how much the girl’s face turns (75 degree). You can look at the cover for a long time and see if you still like them or one of them.
Best wishes to you.

Right from your remodelling project to your upcoming lovely book, so much going on simultaneously. And yes, I endorse your view that writing a book is like birthing a baby. I have experienced it while writing books of instructions for my bank. Proposed name, cover and artwork are so attractive. Whatever you write shows your fun and energy, and that’s why readers like me are your fans. My best wishes for everything. Have a great weekend, Cindy🎉 😊💖🙏

HI Cindy, my goodness your renovations are taking forever. I hate being in that sort of chaos and avoid remodeling as a result. We have done all three of our bathrooms and three of our five bedrooms but I am holding out on the kitchen. I am perfectly happy with it how it is. Thanks for all the updates. Both potential covers are lovely, but I like the first one very much. What do they do about the polyps? Do you need surgery to remove them?
